#2ndHS Bond Referendum Special Election February 6

Second High School Bond Referendum

The Waukee Community School District Board of Education met in special session on December 19, 2017, to approve a motion ordering a special election on February 6, 2018.

Voters will be asked if the district should borrow an amount not to exceed $117 million in general obligation bonds to build a second high school and make improvements to the current high school.

Approval of this bond referendum will not impact the district’s portion of the property tax rate.

“The district has been planning for this referendum for a few years. We’ve been working to pay off debt early to increase our ability to bond as well as save taxpayer dollars. To date Waukee Community School District has saved taxpayers over $13 million. Due to this savings, the debt service portion of the levy will not increase, as we add this new debt,” said chief financial officer Lora Appenzeller-Miller.

Waukee Community School District’s is planning to build the second high school on 160 acres of land north of Hickman Road and east of 10th Street in Waukee. The building is slated to open in the fall of 2021.

For the bond to pass, 60% of voters must vote yes. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 6, 2018 at two locations, Waukee Community School District Administration Office, 560 SE University Ave, Waukee and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines.

Waukee Community School District Residents 18 years of age and older can also vote absentee by mail. The Dallas County Auditor will send you an official ballot that must be postmarked and returned by Feb. 5, 2018. Contact the Dallas County Auditor with questions, 515.993.6914.
